The “Min Yoon Gi Center” officially opened at Severance Hospital of Yonsei University on September 30th.
The center was established with a 5 billion won ($3.6 million) donation Suga made to the children’s hospital last June. The opening ceremony was attended by hospital leadership, including General Director of Severance Hospital Lee Kang Young and President of Severance Children’s Hospital Kang Hoon Chul, as well as community leaders such as Kim Yong Jik, President of the Autism Society of Korea.
The facility includes rooms for language and behavioral therapy, as well as group therapy rooms for music and social skills, equipped with advanced soundproofing. The waiting area features artwork by Lee Kyu Jae, an artist on the autism spectrum.
Suga’s involvement goes beyond the donation. He has been volunteering since last year with the center’s director, Professor Cheon Geun Ah, playing guitar for children with autism. His work inspired the ‘MIND’ program, a music-based group therapy where children play instruments in ensembles to build social skills. The program has been highly effective for children with communication challenges.
The center will provide customized, integrated care from a team of pediatric psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, and specialized therapists.
“The Min Yoon Gi Center is a launchpad for art-fusion therapy that brings together music, art and even physical education,” said Director Cheon Geun Ah. “It will play a significant role in improving treatment outcomes and fostering greater social understanding of disabilities.”
To meet expected demand, Severance Hospital plans to expand and relocate the center in the future and will train more specialized staff to enhance its services.
