Choi Jung Won, formerly of the K-pop group UN, is under investigation for stalking and making aggravated threats against an ex-girlfriend.
The Seoul police announced that Choi was formally booked on stalking charges after he allegedly went to the home of a woman on August 16th with a weapon and threatened her just days after she had broken up with him.
Dispatch reported that Choi is also facing charges of aggravated intimidation, alleging he threatened his former partner with a kitchen knife. The report also confirmed a pattern of threatening phone calls and messages.
Recognizing the immediate danger, police took emergency measures and issued a temporary restraining order against Choi to protect the victim.
A Seoul court quickly approved the protective order, explaining that the situation was “urgent, and it was deemed necessary to prevent continuous stalking behavior.”
In South Korea, these protective orders are designed to protect victims by legally preventing the perpetrator from coming within 100 meters (about 330 feet) of them or contacting them via phone, text, or any other electronic means.
If Choi violates the order, he could face up to one year in prison or a fine of up to 10 million won ($7,200). Police have stated that the investigation into the full scope of the alleged crimes is ongoing.
