Singer-actor Choi Jung Won has been cleared of affair allegations after an appeals court struck down a lower court ruling that had found him culpable.
On September 19th, the Seoul High Court issued its decision in the divorce appeal case of a woman identified as “A” and her husband “B.” The court ruled that Choi Jung Won and A’s relationship did not amount to an extramarital affair under civil law.
The initial trial court had previously ruled that A’s interactions with Choi constituted misconduct, placing primary responsibility for the marital collapse on her. But the appeals court rejected that view, stating, “It is difficult to conclude that A and Choi Jung Won engaged in behavior that violated marital fidelity or directly led to the breakdown of the marriage. Rather, it was the defendant B’s coercive attitude in handling the conflict that caused the marital breakdown.”
Attorney Noh Jong Eon of Jonjae Law Group, representing A, said, “Since the first trial, A lived under the stigma of being labeled an adulteress. The pain was immeasurable. Her health deteriorated so severely that continuing her career became difficult, and she is still struggling with illness while raising her child.” He urged media outlets to correct earlier reports that suggested an affair, stressing that the higher court’s ruling had proven those claims false.
The case began in January 2023, when B alleged that Choi had engaged in an affair with his wife and subsequently filed a civil lawsuit seeking 100 million KRW (approx. 72,000 USD) in damages.
At the time, Choi publicly denied the allegations on Instagram, saying A was never his girlfriend but rather a neighborhood friend he had known since childhood. He admitted to exchanging messages and meeting her for two or three meals, but insisted, “They were simple check-ins, nothing inappropriate.”
