Choo Young Woo is once again facing public backlash—this time over his choice of phone case.
On September 4th, images circulated online showing Choo at a Tom Ford event using a phone with a case that quickly sparked controversy. The design depicted a cartoon schoolgirl in a garter belt and short skirt standing outside a storefront labeled ADULT GOODS. Also printed on the case was “LOVE MERCI,” the name of a real adult shop in Tokyo’s Akihabara district.
While the imagery itself drew discomfort, the controversy deepened when the illustrator behind the design was identified. The artist, with just over 500 followers on Instagram, openly shared links to purchase the case. Many of their other works also feature schoolgirl characters in highly revealing outfits and suggestive poses, fueling criticism of sexual objectification.

The incident is especially damaging because it comes just months after Choo Young Woo was embroiled in another scandal. Earlier this year, he was criticized for following a so-called “strip broadcast” BJ and rapper Jung Sang Soo, who has prior assault and disorderly conduct convictions.
Born in 1999, Choo debuted in 2021 and gained recognition for his breakout performance in The Tale of Lady Ok (2022). His career momentum continued with The Trauma Center and the most recent romance drama Head Over Heels , and he is currently considering an offer to star in Long Vacation (literal title).
Despite his rising profile and positive reviews for his acting, his private life has repeatedly overshadowed his career. The phone case controversy has reignited debate, with online commenters writing, “If a female celebrity carried a case with sexualized underage boys, the uproar would be even bigger,” and “It’s not even surprising anymore given this is the second scandal in less than a year.” Others added, “Hopefully ,he won’t try to excuse it as just a gift.”
