Hwang Jung Eum is facing serious legal trouble after allegedly misusing company funds for personal use—including cryptocurrency investments, tax payments, and even her own credit card bills.
According to a July 11th report by Chosun Ilbo, Hwang is accused of diverting over 4.3 billion won ($3.1 million) from a company she founded, with prosecutors claiming that roughly 4.2 billion KRW of that was poured into cryptocurrency investments.
Hwang also faces embezzlement charges for using roughly 4.43 million won ($3,220) for credit card payments. The funds were reportedly used to pay Hwang Jung Eum’s property and local taxes. Additionally, she allegedly used embezzled money to cover 1.04 million won in interest payments on stock-secured loans.
Prosecutors revealed that Hwang initially attempted to open a crypto trading account under her agency’s name. When that failed, she moved the funds into her own account without drawing up any loan agreement—no repayment terms, no interest clauses.
She was indicted last December under the Special Economic Crimes Act and is currently on trial. At her first court appearance in May, Hwang admitted to all charges.
In response, her agency Y.ONE Entertainment released a statement on the 17th, explaining, “Hwang Jung Eum has repaid the full amount through the sale of personal assets. As the sole owner of a one-person corporation without a professional business manager, she lacked proper tax and accounting knowledge and deeply regrets the situation.”
Following the scandal, Hwang has stepped down from ongoing variety shows and disappeared from commercial endorsements.
