Super Junior’s Kim Hee Chul is looking back on the unexpected chaos his “pretty boy” looks caused in his early career.
The singer appeared on the August 20th episode of MBC’s talk show Radio Star , where he shared a string of stories about how his image sparked more than a few misunderstandings.
Kim recalled a moment from his teenage years with TVXQ’s Yunho. “There used to be this huge burger place on Apgujeong Rodeo Street. Yunho and I were upstairs eating, and he told me there was a girl he liked. He said he wanted to introduce me,” Kim explained. “At the time I had long hair and was always dressed in floral patterns. Yunho’s friend came up the stairs, saw my back, and thought he was with another girl. She just turned around and left. Yunho was still in high school then—we were both young and didn’t know what was going on. She stopped answering his calls, and Yunho cried his eyes over it.”
The stories didn’t end there. Kim shared how his close friendships also led to speculation. “I’ve always been close with people like Jang Keun Suk and Lee Hong Gi—we have similar vibes. Because of that, rumors that I was a gay followed me for a long time. Eventually, I even had dating rumors with Mithra Jin,” he said. “We were really close when I debuted. He’s taller and has a very macho image, and I had long hair back then. We used to walk around arm-in-arm. It got so serious that Mithra Jin would meet me without even telling the other Epik High members. One time, Tablo caught us and gave me the side-eye.”
Host Kim Gu Ra asked why Mithra Jin had tried to keep their hangouts a secret, quipping, “Maybe he actually liked you back then—though probably not now.” Kim Hee Chul laughed, “Oh really? Maybe. But honestly, I liked Mithra Jin because he was so different from me. He always listened to me seriously. And we even had the same car. I was always in his passenger seat, and there’s a kind of coziness that comes with that. He’d drive quietly, and I’d be the one handing him snacks.”
When another panelist joked that Mithra Jin’s wife might be surprised watching the episode, Kim shot back playfully, “I went to their wedding and even took a photo with them. But seeing him get married—honestly, it stung a little!”
