Genie Make a Wish controversy - 1

Just days after Netflix confirmed an October 3rd release date for its fantasy rom-com Genie, Make a Wish , the series is already facing controversy.

On August 20th, Netflix unveiled the official poster and teaser for the series, which follows Genie ( Kim Woo Bin ), a genie awakened after a thousand years, who encounters Ga Young ( Suzy ), an emotionally detached human, in a whimsical story revolving around three wishes. The project has been highly anticipated—not only as Kim Woo Bin and Suzy’s first reunion since the 2016 KBS drama Uncontrollably Fond , but also as the latest work from celebrated writer Kim Eun Sook of Descendants of the Sun, Goblin and The Glory returning after three years.

In Korea, however, reactions have been sharply divided. Many pointed out that Western and Asian media frequently adapt religious and mythological figures such as Lucifer into fictional narratives. Netizens noted that recent Korean series like Judge From Hell also featured demon-inspired characters, and Netflix’s current global hit KPop Demon Hunters even centers on a boy group called “Saja Boys,” modeled after grim reapers.

As one commenter put it, “It’s not even a sacred name, so why is this an issue?” Others added, “It’s a fictional character—getting angry over this feels excessive,” and “Why not wait until the drama actually airs before criticizing?”

Despite the controversy, anticipation remains high for Genie, Make a Wish , with fans eager to see Kim Woo Bin and Suzy’s on-screen chemistry reignite in what promises to be one of the fall season’s most talked-about dramas.
