Lee Bo Young is returning to the small screen—this time with a bold new drama that takes a direct look at the deeply sensitive topic of assisted dying. Mary Kills People , the Korean adaptation of the Canadian cult hit, is set to deliver a heavy, thought-provoking story that poses a question: how do we want to die?
On the morning of July 31st, a press conference was held at MBC’s Sangam headquarters to introduce the upcoming Friday-Saturday drama. Lee Bo Young, Lee Min Ki, Kang Ki Young, Kwon Hae Hyo, Yoon Gai, and director Park Joon Woo were in attendance.
Mary Kills People follows a doctor who helps terminally ill patients end their lives on their own terms—and the detective tracking her down. While medical assistance in dying (MAID) has been legalized in Canada since 2016, the issue remains controversial in Korea, where religious, ethical, and cultural debates are still very much alive.

When asked about her own views on the subject, Lee Bo Young shared a surprisingly personal moment. “I first received the script in July of last year,” she said. “Around that time, I saw news about an elderly couple overseas who chose assisted dying together. Ji Sung and I talked about it at length, and we thought it didn’t seem like a bad way to go.”
She added, “We said, ‘If we grow old but still aren’t a burden to our kids, maybe we could make that choice too.’ The fact that they made the decision while they were still of sound mind shows that they’ve lived a full, happy life.”
Still, Lee didn’t pretend to have all the answers. “I’m honestly not sure. I’m not in a position to say whether it’s right or wrong. From what I see, they’ve lived a good life, but when I think about the people left behind, their kids, the way society looks at it… I don’t know what’s right,” she confessed. “I was a little worried about doing this project, but I also hope it starts a conversation. Even if we don’t have answers, it’s worth talking about.”
