New drama Whale Star: The Gyeongseong Mermaid (webtoon’s English title) is drawing major attention as Mun Ka Young joins Choi Woo Shik in reviewing offers to lead the cast.
Whale Star , based on the award-winning webtoon of the same name, is a melodrama set against the backdrop of the Japanese occupation. It tells the story of Kang Ui Hyeon, a man who sacrifices everything for his country, and Heo Su Ah, a woman who gives her all to protect him and vanishes into seafoam. Inspired by The Little Mermaid, the webtoon won the 2021 Korea Content Awards’ Presidential Prize, fueling hype for its adaptation.
Choi Woo Shik’s agency confirmed he is reviewing the script. He’s been offered the role of Kang Ui Hyeon, born into a wealthy pro-Japanese family. After witnessing the 1923 Kanto Massacre while studying in Japan, he joins the independence movement and secretly runs a photo studio used for spy photography and code-breaking.
Mun Ka Young has been offered the role of Heo Su Ah, a servant in a pro-Japanese landlord’s house in 1920s Gyeongseong. After losing her voice in an accident, she forms a fateful bond with Kang Ui Hyeon.
With strong anticipation already surrounding the project, the potential pairing of Choi and Mun is generating buzz, especially as the two have never worked together before.
The drama will be directed by period film specialist Hur Jin Ho ( The Last Princess , Christmas in August ) with cinematography by Choi Yoon Man ( My Mister ). Production is led by TAKEONE Studio, with a large-scale budget expected due to the historical setting.
