A police officer who was fired for allegedly leaking details of the late actor Lee Sun Kyun ‘s drug investigation has lost his lawsuit to get his job back. The Incheon District Court upheld the officer’s dismissal in a ruling on August 22nd.

The former police lieutenant, identified only as Mr. A, was accused of leaking an official investigation progress report to a media outlet in October 2023. The document reportedly contained sensitive personal information, including the names and criminal records of individuals connected to the case against the Parasite star.

In its ruling, the court stated that the officer’s actions were an “extremely severe” breach of conduct. The judge noted that police have a high duty to protect the confidentiality of ongoing investigations and that the officer’s leak “went far beyond” acceptable police-media interaction. The court concluded that his actions violated the rights of those being investigated and damaged public trust in the police.

The officer has already appealed the court’s decision.

This all began with the famous drug investigation into actor Lee Sun Kyun back in October 2023. The acclaimed actor was questioned by police three times over two months before he was tragically found deceased in Seoul on December 27, 2023.
