Renowned director Park Chan Wook, who is awaiting the release of his upcoming film No Other Choice , has been expelled from the Writers Guild of America (WGA).

According to Variety, the WGA took disciplinary action against both Park and Don McKellar, who co-wrote the screenplay for the HBO miniseries The Sympathizer . The two were reportedly expelled for working on the series during the 2023 WGA strike.

The strike, which lasted from May to September 2023, brought a significant number of American film and television productions to a halt. The WGA was fighting for demands that included higher wages, fair profit-sharing in the streaming era, and restrictions on the use of artificial intelligence.

Following the strike, the WGA took action against seven individuals for violating strike rules. Park and McKellar were among the seven and neither writer appealed the guild’s decision, according to reports.

Expulsion from the WGA, which represents over 10,000 Hollywood film and TV writers, prevents individuals from officially working as writers on any film or TV projects covered by the guild in the United States. Expelled members also lose access to key WGA benefits, including minimum wage protections, residuals and health and pension plans.
