Park Chan Wook’s latest film No Other Choice —starring Lee Byung Hun and Son Ye Jin — has been selected as South Korea’s official submission for the Best International Feature Film category at next year’s Academy Awards.
The Korean Film Council announced the decision following a review of potential contenders, noting that No Other Choice stood out for its artistic and commercial strengths.
In a statement, the committee explained, “Taking into account its assured cinematic quality, its timely theme of ‘layoffs,’ the impressive performances from the cast, and the support of a capable North American distributor, we determined it was the most competitive entry. The film’s ironic blend of humor and tragedy—turning a universal crisis into sharp, dark comedy—is the kind of work we believe the Academy will applaud.”
The International Feature Film category accepts only one entry per country each year, recognizing films produced outside the United States.
No Other Choice had its world premiere on August 29th at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival, where it has already been considered a frontrunner for the Golden Lion.
