No Other Choice has won the first-ever International People’s Choice Award at the 50th Toronto International Film Festival.

This new award is voted on by audiences and recognizes the most popular international film at the festival, excluding entries from the U.S. and Canada. TIFF’s People’s Choice awards are often considered early bellwethers for the Oscar race, making this win particularly significant for the film.

The award further solidifies the global appeal of No Other Choice , a gripping survival drama that has clearly resonated with audiences.

In a statement reacting to the news, director Park Chan Wook expressed his gratitude: “I wasn’t surprised to hear about the award because I saw and heard the audience’s enthusiastic reactions for myself during the screening. They reacted exactly when and how we hoped they would. The Toronto audience was truly the best in the world. My sincere thanks go out to all the staff and volunteers.”

The win in Toronto adds to a growing list of accolades for the film, which was also an official selection at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival and served as the opening film for the 30th Busan International Film Festival.

No Other Choice is scheduled to be released in Korea on September 24th.
