Son Ye Jin candidly reflected on her experience at the Venice International Film Festival, where her film No Other Choice left empty-handed despite high expectations and glowing reviews.
In an interview on September 23rd, the actress admitted that the team had hoped for recognition. “Honestly, no one from the film who attended Venice would say they had zero expectations,” she said. “We were getting real-time reviews from reporters there, and they were so positive. Naturally, I thought, ‘Oh, we’re going to win something.’”
When the awards were announced and their film wasn’t called, she recalled the collective shock with a laugh: “Everyone was just like… ‘…’ ‘Huh?’ I really thought it would get at least one award.”
Son added that winning often comes down to “luck in the moment,” but emphasized that the film quickly found its audience elsewhere. She pointed to its success in Toronto, where it won the prestigious People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival.
The movie has since been selected as South Korea’s official entry for the 2026 Academy Awards. Asked about its Oscar chances, Son responded humbly: “Of course, I hope it does well. I wish this film succeeds and wins an award.”
She also shared behind-the-scenes stories from working with director Park Chan Wook, describing him as meticulous about the rhythm and stress of dialogue. One example was a heated argument scene with her on-screen husband, where she delivered her lines in a rapid-fire style. The director asked her to tone it down.
After seeing the final cut, she playfully told him, “I still think my interpretation of that scene was the right one.” She revealed that many cast members had similar moments, prompting the director to joke, “Let’s have a Blu-ray battle with our different versions.”
Son even teased him, asking, “Did you tell me to change it because you don’t like how your wife talks?” before laughing and adding that, in reality, the director and his wife are a very loving couple.
