Son Ye Jin got brutally honest about the reality of red carpet glamour during a talk at the Busan International Film Festival, revealing the intense preparation that go into a single moment in the spotlight.
During the festival’s Actors’ House event on September 18th, Son was asked about her first memory of BIFF. “Honestly, I don’t remember the first time,” she confessed. “Only the dress comes to mind.”
She then pulled back the curtain on the immense pressure that actresses face. “Before a film festival, it’s all about what dress to wear, how much to diet, and how revealing it should be,” she explained. “That’s why everyone goes on a ‘torture-level’ diet. All actresses are the same.”

“Actors get the spotlight, walk the red carpet, and meet audiences in beautiful clothes, but for that brief moment, the rest of the time is just a battle of endurance,” she explained. “To achieve what you want in that fleeting moment, you have to eat chicken breast until you’re sick of it and do back exercises daily.”
She also reflected on the personal cost of her career, saying poignantly, “My twenties, my youth, they basically only exist through my work. I’ve lived my life without ever truly enjoying it for myself.”
“However, because I’m an actress, I’m grateful that those moments are at least preserved in my films,” she concluded, offering some hard-won advice. “Whatever you do… You really need to try your absolute hardest. Then, eventually, there will be a moment when you shine.”
Son Ye Jin is at the festival for No Other Choice , which was the opening film for the 30th edition of BIFF.
