Song Il Kook revealed that he has been living apart from his wife for the past two and a half years and is currently raising their famous triplets, Daehan, Minguk, and Manse, on his own during the week. The star opened up about his life as a “weekend husband” on the September 11th episode of tvN STORY’s talk show Spouse Space .
He explained that his wife, who is a judge, was assigned to a position in a provincial city, a common practice in the Korean legal system. “She only comes up to Seoul on the weekends,” he said. “I’m the one taking care of the kids.”
Song, whose sons are now in middle school, admitted that parenting alone is challenging. “The hardest part is the academy runs,” he confessed, referring to the endless cycle of chauffeuring them to various after-school activities. He also added, “My wife’s absence is deeply felt, especially when it comes to the kids’ education. It’s tough doing it all by myself.”
He also shared a specific parenting strategy for his triplets to help them develop their individuality. “People often say you should send twins to separate schools to avoid comparisons,” he said. “I didn’t go that far, but I did request that they be placed in different classes at school.”
Like many parents of teens, he’s also navigating puberty. “Now, when I just put my arm around them, they push it away,” he said wistfully. Fellow celebrity dad Kim Jung-min reassured him, “Just wait a little, they’ll come back to you.”
