According to Gwangjin Police Station, he was discovered after an acquaintance contacted authorities when he missed an appointment and became unreachable. Officers dispatched to his residence found his body.
Police reported no signs of foul play and confirmed that no suicide note was found. “We believe he died from a chronic illness,” a police official stated, adding that an autopsy would be conducted to determine the exact cause of death. This is supported by reports that the YouTuber had recently complained of chest pains to those around him.
His younger sister and his ex-wife, fellow YouTuber Yumdaeng, are listed as the primary family members for his funeral service.
Tributes have been pouring in from fellow creators and entertainment industry figures following the sudden loss of the first-generation YouTuber.
Comedian Ahn Young Mi shared a photo of white chrysanthemums on social media on September 7th, writing, “May he rest in peace. I will not forget and will always remember.” Though she did not mention him by name, the post was widely understood to be a tribute to Great Library.
Fashion designer Lee Chung Chung, son of designer Lee Sang Bong, also mourned him by posting a photo of the two with their arms around each other on September 6th. “My dear Dong Hyun (Great Library’s real name), my friend. Your bright smile and energy were truly a blessing to us. I never thought this would be our last photo together,” he wrote. “I’m so heartbroken. I hope you’ll only have happiness now, without pain. Why is it that the most precious things always disappear?”
Entertainer Harisu also paid tribute on September 6th, posting a photo of the late creator along with the message: “It feels like it wasn’t that long ago that we met on MBN’s Voice Trot. I hope you can rest peacefully in heaven. May you rest in peace.”
Comedian Kim Dae Beom, who received much help from Great Library when he first started YouTube, expressed his shock and grief. “I’m so shocked and devastated. He was Korea’s top YouTuber, always kind and polite,” he recalled. He continued, “Great Library, who always radiated such positive energy—why did you have to leave for heaven so soon? It’s far too early.”
