Netflix has canceled the livestream portion of its upcoming fan event for the original series Trigger , in light of a real-life gun crime that shocked the nation.

On July 21st, Netflix confirmed to Dispatch, “The ‘Trigger’ livestream on Naver, originally scheduled for the 22nd, has been canceled. However, the offline fan event with those who registered will proceed as planned.”

Trigger is a high-octane action thriller that imagines a Korea flooded with illegal firearms—a stark contrast to the country’s reputation as a gun-free zone. The plot follows a string of mysterious deliveries of black-market weapons, with Kim Nam Gil (as Lee Do) and Kim Young Kwang (as Moon Baek) both picking up guns for reasons of their own.

The decision to cancel the livestream comes just days after a real-world tragedy involving a homemade gun. On July 20th, a man in his 60s fatally shot his son at an apartment complex in Songdo, Incheon using an illegal, self-assembled firearm. He fled the scene but was apprehended three hours later.

Authorities later discovered 15 explosive devices at the suspect’s residence, along with 11 homemade guns and 86 rounds of ammunition in his vehicle. According to police, the man admitted to manufacturing the weapons using pipes and other materials.

Meanwhile, a press conference for Netflix’s upcoming series Trigger was held on July 22nd with stars Kim Nam Gil, Kim Young Kwang, Park Hoon, Gil Hae Yeon, and director Kwon Oh Seung in attendance.

During the event, director Kwon addressed concerns about the show’s depiction of guns in light of a recent tragic incident, saying, “First, I want to express my regret and sympathy for the heartbreaking event. That said, I believe the connection to Trigger is being misunderstood.”

He continued, “If you look closely at how the characters use guns in the series, you’ll see that the context and consequences are very different. I hope people can separate this tragedy from the story we’re telling.”

“We absolutely do not glorify crime,” he emphasized. “And I believe anyone who watches the series through to the end will see that for themselves.”

Trigger premieres July 25th on Netflix.
