Girls’ Generation member YoonA is looking back on her long acting career, from her difficult early days to her current success with the hit drama Bon Appétit, Your Majesty .
Speaking on the YouTube channel Baek Eun Ha’s Joogobatgo on September 22nd, YoonA reflected on her first leading role at age 19 in the daily drama You Are My Sunshine. “When I first started acting, I did it without much understanding… I just did my absolute best,” she recalled.
She admitted to going through periods where she “struggled significantly with acting,” citing the 2017 film Confidential Assignment as a major turning point. “During Confidential Assignment, I realized acting was enjoyable again,” she said. “Now, I feel like I can enjoy it. If I get a project that lets me show a different side of myself, I’ll be able to really enjoy the process.”
For her current role as a time-traveling French chef, she revealed she “attended cooking classes for three months” to prepare. “My cooking skills have definitely improved,” she laughed.
She also had high praise for her younger co-star, Lee Chae Min . “He’s very mature for his age, though he was born in 2000,” she said. “His way of thinking is mature, so conversations with him were comfortable. He seems to express himself very freely.”
Now 36, YoonA reflected on becoming a veteran in the industry. “When I was younger, I thought actresses at this age were so mature and cool, but now that I’m well past that age, I still think, ‘I don’t really feel like such a grown up.’” She added, “It’s a period where I’m gaining my own sense of composure. I want to take care of my juniors more and create something together.”
