Young trot star Jung Dong Won has had his unlicensed driving case officially referred to the prosecutor’s office.

Police reportedly uncovered the violation while investigating a separate case in which Jung was the victim. Earlier this year, he was blackmailed by three individuals who had taken his phone and demanded 200 million won ($148,000), threatening to expose his private life.

Jung handed over 100 million won ($74,000) to retrieve the phone, and the blackmailers were arrested after his agency filed a complaint. During that investigation, police discovered videos of Jung’s past unlicensed driving in his hometown of Hadong on the device and forwarded the case to prosecutors in June.

Jung’s agency, Showplay Entertainment, released a formal apology today, acknowledging that he drove without a license. “Jung did drive for about 10 minutes near his hometown on a mountain road, and a passenger filmed the scene,” the agency said. “He only drove once out of curiosity.”

The agency added that Jung refused to comply with further blackmail attempts, instead reporting the perpetrators to the police. The suspects are currently on trial.

This is not Jung’s first traffic-related offense. In March 2023, he was also caught illegally riding a motorcycle on a highway in Seoul, where two-wheeled vehicles are prohibited.

Showplay concluded, “Jung deeply regrets and reflects on his mistake. Through this incident, we will do our utmost to help him grow into a more mature and responsible member of society. We once again sincerely apologize to the fans and the public.”
